These pens are made from wood recovered from the Rochford Street Elm in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. This well known and stately tree succumbed to the powerful winds of Hurricane Fiona on September 24, 2022.
The Rochford Street Elm was planted circa 1881. This would make the tree 141 years old when it was felled by this violent storm. This tree was amongst the oldest known trees, if not the oldest, in the Charlottetown area.
The City of Charlottetown had the foresight to save pieces of some of the larger and beautiful trees that were toppled by Fiona. They felt that pieces could be made into items that would remind citizens of the beautiful old trees that had survived for more than a century. Trees, such as the Rochford Street Elm, are a treasure and part of the heritage of Charlottetown and all of Prince Edward Island.
Due to the variations in the wood, no two pens are exactly the same – each one is unique.
Each pen has a contoured grip for comfort during use. Each pen is sealed in a two step process. It is a shellac base with a wax on top of that. They have a twist mechanism to expose the nib of the pen. A perfect gift for graduations, retirements, or anyone that still writes by hand. This pen uses refills that can be obtained from most office supply stores. All pens have black ink and are Gift Boxed.
